Comparative toxicity of trivalent and hexavalent chromium V: Enzymatic alterations in rat liver and kidneys.

چکیده
The effect of trivalent and hexavalent chromium compounds on the activities of selective hepatic drug metabolising enzymes and renal enzymes, in relation to the duration of exposure and tissue concentration of the metal in rats, was investigated to evaluate their potential toxicity. The activity of hepatic aniline hydroxylase decreased more markedly than that of amino N-demethylase on treatment with Cr irrespective of valence state. The activity of hepatic glutathione S-transferase decreased with duration of treatment with Cr+6, more significantly than with Cr+3. On the other hand, the levels of renal glutamic oxalacetic transaminase, acid phosphatase and lactic dehydrogenase were lowered significantly on treatment with Cr" only. The liver and blood concentrations of Cr increased with duration of exposure, more markedly in animals exposed to Cr+6. The uptake of renal Cr was however very slow and was independant of valence state of the metal.

This study evaluated the toxicity of hexavalent and trivalent compounds of chromium to the pacu, Piaractus mesopotamicus, in acute exposures of 96 h through mortality and histopathological responses. Hexavalent potassium dichromate was more toxic than trivalent compounds of chromium chloride, chromium oxide and chromium carbochelate. Sufficient mortalities occurred only with potassium dichromat...
متن کاملThe carcinogenicity of chromium
The carcinogenicity of chromium compounds is reviewed with specific attention to the gaps in knowledge for risk estimation and research needs. The most important problems at present are whether trivalent chromium compounds cause cancer, and whether there is a difference in cancer causing effects between the soluble and the slightly soluble hexavalent compounds in the practical exposure situatio...

Introduction: One of the heavy metals is chromium which is used in trivalent and Hexavalent oxidation state in industries such as, glass, ceramic, tannery, leather especially in electroplating industries. Hexavalent Chromium has proven several health hazards such as a carcinogen. The aim of this study was to investigate the efficiency of Melia azedarach ash in the removal of hexavalent chromium...
متن کاملInfluence of Chromium on the Natural Antioxidant Barrier
Hexavalent chromium (VI) compounds are widely used in industry, while trivalent chromium (III) is used as a nutritional supplement. CrVI is generally considered more toxic and carcinogenic than its trivalent form and the toxicity of this metal is associated with free radical processes generating reactive oxygen species (ROS). The detailed mechanism of ROS formation by chromium and its compounds...
